A great fly for fishing sandy flats like those found in the Bahamas and South Andros, the Spawning Mantis Fly gives a realistic approach to those tough shrimp. Designed to imitate a spawning mantis shrimp, this fly has movement, color, and rides with its hook point up so that you don’t need to worry about getting jammed up. A simple design for a hard-to-imitate shrimp, this fly is tied with realistic eyes, rubber legs for movement, a buggy dubbed body, and heavy dumbbell eyes, and with its orange accent, you get a bold splash of color that does a fine job at attracting bonefish, permit, and other bottom-dwelling flats fish.

The Spawning Mantis Fly can be fished anywhere you find shrimp, especially mantis shrimp, and it’s a fly that benefits from a stripped retrieve with the occasional pause. A good fly to carry in sizes 2-8, this shrimp pattern can be fished all year long in tropical areas and from spring through fall in the northeast climates. A reliable pattern that you can count on, the Spawning Mantis Fly is a fly that helps complete any saltwater box.
