Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Off-Road differ from a standard MicroSport?

Three things: the finish, the tires and the intent. The frame is black powder coated over pre-galvanized steel, which is a more corrosion-resistant combination than galvanizing alone. It runs large oversized pontoon tires instead of the standard 12-inch wheels. And the whole trailer is fully submersible.

The core numbers carry over: 800-pound capacity, boats up to 20 feet, 78-inch load bars with an adjustable 44-to-63-inch spread, 13 feet 3 inches long, 197 pounds empty, and load bars 30 inches from the ground.

What does off-road capable actually mean here?

It means the trailer is built for the rough, wet, unpaved conditions that get between you and a launch gravel tracks, sand, washed-out ramp approaches, forest roads. The pontoon tires float better on soft ground and the coating copes with repeated wetting.

It is not a promise that the trailer will cope with every surface or every route. Ground clearance, approach angles, load, tire pressure and condition, weather and your tow vehicle all set real limits, and so do posted speed limits and any local restrictions on where trailers may be taken. Slow down for rough surfaces and inspect the trailer afterwards.

What is included?

The chassis and running gear, with no boat carriers and no spare tire. You get the reinforced steel tongue, oversized pontoon wheels on pre-assembled marine-grade sealed hubs, a DOT-approved plug-and-play submersible LED light kit, the 78-inch square steel load bars with D-ring tie-downs, and the instruction manual with registration paperwork.

It arrives as a multi-boxed item, typically five cartons. If you want carriers and a spare tire specified for you, the Off-Road packages cover the common setups see our MicroSport Off-Road trailers.

How much can it carry?

800 pounds in total, covering canoes or kayaks up to 20 feet. That is the controlling limit for everything on the frame at once boats, whatever carriers or bunks you add, straps, storage and gear.

It is not a per-boat allowance, and carrier ratings sit inside the total rather than adding to it. Your tow vehicle and hitch impose separate limits and the lowest relevant figure governs. Unloaded tongue weight is 25 pounds; where you place the load changes the loaded figure.

Are carriers included, and what fits?

No carriers are supplied with the base trailer. The 78-inch bars take J-cradles, FoldAway-J folding carriers, saddles, wing-style carriers, stackers and padded bunks, and the adjustable 44-to-63-inch bar spread lets you place support points where a particular hull is strongest.

Every carrier has its own weight rating and its own hull-shape suitability, and not every trailer accessory in the Malone range fits every trailer. Confirm compatibility before ordering. Browse trailer accessories, or contact our team with your boats and we will specify a set.

What hitch hardware does it need?

The trailer coupler requires a 2-inch-diameter hitch ball, and the top of that ball should sit 18 inches from the ground so the trailer tows level. That is the trailer’s side of the connection. Lighting is a DOT-approved plug-and-play submersible LED kit, so confirm your vehicle’s connector matches.

Your vehicle needs a hitch with a receiver, a ball mount that fits that receiver, and a 2-inch ball fitted to the ball mount. A receiver does not take a ball directly, and receiver size is a separate matter from ball diameter a 2-inch ball does not mean you need a 2-inch receiver. Hitch, receiver, ball mount, ball and tow vehicle must each be rated for the loaded trailer, and the lowest rating in that chain governs.

On rough access tracks your vehicle’s own ground clearance matters too.

Does it require assembly?

Yes around three to four hours with common tools, following the illustrated instructions. The hubs arrive pre-assembled and the electrical system is pre-tested.

It ships as a multi-boxed item and the carton count and shipping method vary with configuration. Inspect the shipment against the supplied documentation before you start, keep the paperwork envelope somewhere safe, and report anything missing or damaged to us promptly at [email protected].

What maintenance does an off-road trailer need?

More attention than a highway-only trailer, because it sees more grit and more water. Before every trip: lights, coupler seated and pinned, safety chains crossed and attached, lug nuts tight, tire condition, and all straps. Service the wheel bearings on the schedule in your trailer’s documentation submersible does not mean maintenance-free, and repeated immersion is exactly what bearing service exists for. Rinse frame, wheels and hardware after salt water, mud or road salt, and check the powder coat for chips. NHTSA tire safety guidance covers tire care generally.

Inflate to the Malone-recommended cold pressure for this trailer, 35 to 40 PSI, checked before towing while the tires are cold, and follow the trailer documentation and current manufacturer specification. A sidewall maximum is not the recommended operating pressure read the sidewall for tire size, load range and maximum limits, not for the figure to inflate to.

What warranty applies, and what do I need to register?

A five-year limited warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for the original retail purchaser, subject to the written terms and exclusions. Normal wear, surface corrosion, accident damage, misuse, overloading and failures caused by not following the assembly instructions fall outside it, and no claim outcome can be promised in advance. Register with Malone within 30 days of purchase and keep your original receipt.

That warranty registration is separate from titling, plating or inspecting the trailer for road use, which varies by state and province check with your state motor vehicle agency.
