The Lamson Guru Fly Rod is for the angler who would rather own one rod that covers the season than a rack of specialists. Lamson builds the Guru on a medium to medium-fast blank that loads early enough to give you feedback on a short cast, then keeps enough backbone deeper in the taper to turn over a weighted nymph rig or push a line through a breeze. Every model is 9 feet and four pieces, in 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 weight, so the same casting stroke carries from a small creek up through big western water.
Lamson also puts the Guru name on a reel series, so it is worth being clear that this listing is the four piece rod. Lamson intends the Guru rods for freshwater: trout of all sizes, warmwater fish like bass and pike, and salmon or steelhead in the heavier weights.
Lamson describes the Guru blank as medium to medium-fast, and that is exactly how it fishes. The bend runs far enough into the rod to be forgiving of a rushed stroke, which is why the same blank works for someone learning to cast and for someone placing a size 20 dry under a bank. The tradeoff is a rod tuned for accuracy and control rather than raw line speed. Weights climb from 3.10 oz in the 4wt to 3.20 oz in the 5wt, 3.30 oz in the 6wt, 3.80 oz in the 7wt and 4.00 oz in the 8wt, so even the heaviest Guru stays light enough to fish all day. The finish is a satin dark pearl with storm grey accents, quiet enough that it will not flash at fish in low water.
Stripping Guide – Lamson specs a silicon carbide (SiC) insert stripping guide. SiC is one of the harder ring materials used on fly rods and it runs slick, so shooting line passes with little friction and the ring resists the grooving that grit and repeated hard casts work into softer inserts.
Lockdown Reel Seat – this is Lamson’s own design and the most distinctive hardware on the rod. Instead of clamping the reel foot against a round barrel, the Lockdown seat mounts the reel on machined aluminum rails. The foot sits flat on a flat surface, which means the reel cannot rotate or rock its way loose over a long day, a common annoyance on conventional round seats. The insert is storm grey anodized aluminum, which shrugs off the moisture and grit a reel seat lives in.
The Guru ships in a Cordura rod tube with internal dividers, so all four sections travel in their own channels instead of knocking against each other in transit.
Lamson covers the Guru with a lifetime warranty against defects in material or workmanship for the original owner, and that warranty covers parts and labor. It does not cover damage from misuse, improper maintenance or modification, and Lamson resolves claims by repair or replacement at their discretion, noting that replacement parts or colors may not match the original. Lamson charges a flat rod service fee of $50, which covers parts and return shipping (Lamson warranty page, verified 2026-08-17). Their rod return instructions commit to fixing or replacing a rod and sending it back within one week or less of its arrival.
