At 56 lbs. the Old Town Sportsman Discovery Solo 119 canoe is the ideal grab-and-go watercraft for anglers and hunters alike. It offers the simplicity and utility of a solo canoe with the agility and sleek handling of a kayak.
Who is the Old Town Sportsman Discovery Solo 119 best suited to?
The Old Town Sportsman Discovery Solo 119 suits anglers and hunters who want an open canoe layout with a kayak’s ease of handling on small water.
It is 11 ft 9 in long, 32.5 in wide and 56 lb assembled, built in three-layer polyethylene, and it carries 298 lb.
Our kayak and canoe comparison explains where the open hull wins and where a sit-on-top wins.
How much weight can the Old Town Sportsman Discovery Solo 119 carry?
The Old Town Sportsman Discovery Solo 119 is rated at 354 lb total and 298 lb usable.
Usable capacity is what remains for you, gear and a dog once the 56 lb boat is deducted. Plan against 298 lb, not the total.
The open layout makes it easy to overload by eye, so weigh a full load once if you plan to carry decoys or camping kit.
What is the layout of the Old Town Sportsman Discovery Solo 119 like to get in and out of?
The Old Town Sportsman Discovery Solo 119 is a hybrid: an open canoe hull with a contoured seat and adjustable backrests rather than a cockpit.
With 18 in of bow height and 12.5 in of depth there is no coaming to climb over, so entry and exit are unobstructed and gear can be reached from anywhere in the boat.
The open deck is also why it takes spray more readily than a sit-inside.
How stable is the Old Town Sportsman Discovery Solo 119?
The Old Town Sportsman Discovery Solo 119 uses a shallow-arch bottom with straight sides and moderate rocker at 32.5 in wide, a shape chosen for predictable manners on small water.
How stable it feels on any given day depends on load, weight distribution, wind, current, chop, water temperature and your own experience rather than on hull shape alone.
Kneel or sit low when conditions get lively.
What should be bought alongside the Old Town Sportsman Discovery Solo 119?
A paddle and a life jacket are not supplied with the Old Town Sportsman Discovery Solo 119 and are needed on every trip.
A canoe hull calls for a single-blade canoe paddle or a long kayak paddle rather than a standard recreational length. Tell us your height and we can size a kayak paddle against the 32.5 in beam.
A dry bag and a bailer are the usual next additions on an open boat.
How is the Old Town Sportsman Discovery Solo 119 transported and stored?
The Old Town Sportsman Discovery Solo 119 weighs 56 lb assembled and is 11 ft 9 in long.
Roof capability is still set by the lowest of your vehicle roof rating, crossbar rating and rack rating, so confirm all three rather than assuming a light boat is automatically fine.
Store it shaded and supported evenly, ideally upside down on padded bars.
What warranty applies to the Old Town Sportsman Discovery Solo 119?
The hull and deck of the Old Town Sportsman Discovery Solo 119 carry limited lifetime coverage for the original retail purchaser.
Accessories such as paddles and life jackets are covered for one year. There is no drive or motor fitted, so the five-year and two-year component terms do not apply here.
Warranty claims begin with Old Town. Eco Fishing Shop can help identify the correct support path, but coverage decisions are made under the Old Town warranty terms.
Can the Old Town Sportsman Discovery Solo 119 be used in saltwater, and how should it be looked after?
Yes, the Old Town Sportsman Discovery Solo 119 can be used in saltwater provided you rinse it with fresh water afterward.
Three-layer polyethylene copes well with salt; the seat frame, backrest hardware and anything you have bolted on are what corrode, so aim the hose there.
Dry it, then store it shaded and evenly supported. Prolonged sun is what ages the hull over the years.
